Image
Aaron Points has never had to interview for a job. So the aspiring graduate of Victoria College's process technology program wouldn't miss an opportunity to see what the experience is like. Dillon Hammond of Dow Chemical, Bobby Garner of Invista, Shawn Wehmeyer and Lance Harlan of Formosa Plastics, and Beth Baker of Austin Water recently spent six hours conducting mock interviews with 14 students on the VC Process Technology Program. The exercise helped students prepare for the difficult questions they will have to answer when applying for a job. “I've worked for a couple of companies and they really needed help, so they hired me. There wasn't an actual interview process, ”said Points, who will complete the program with an Associate of Applied Science in the spring. "So that was a new experience for me." Fred Chastain, VC pr

Explainable AI is essential in education

Image
Edtech adoption in our schools has increased during the pandemic, and if reports are to be believed, the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has steadily increased too. This is largely a positive development, but do principals and teachers really understand the technology? AI is often adaptive and self-learning, which means that what it already understands about a learner will lead it to draw certain conclusions about that learner's future needs. As more schools use AI-powered technologies, it becomes more important that teachers understand how technology makes decisions. Teachers need to understand not only what a child has learned, but also how they have learned it. For this to be possible, AI-enabled technology vendors need to explain how to choose a particular course of action. Holding back the tears, Teresa Short described her struggles trying to help her son, a preschooler in need of special education, catch up after the school disruptions caused by COVID. Her school district, Fayette County Schools in Somerville, could only offer summer academic programs to children in K-12, she said. The reason, she was told, was the limited funding. She joined a crowded room with parents, students, educators, boards of directors, school board members and activists Thursday at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis to visit the second of eight town ha
