Gig firms push back against drive towards worker employee status | Technology News

Firms like Uber, Doordash say their workers enjoy the flexibility of the gig economy; Working groups fear the creation of an underclass. With the growing threat of a new U.S. government insisting on classifying hail and grocery suppliers as full-benefit employees, gig economy companies like Uber, Lyft, Doordash and Instacart are pushing for their drivers' status as independent contractors to be retained, albeit with additional benefits. Those companies, whose business models are based on low-cost flexible labor, argue that surveys show that the majority of their workers do not want to be workers and that a new generation of workers want to choose when and how much they want to work. They hope to convince US officials and lawmakers to drop attempts to classify gig workers as white-collar workers.
