Connected Health Research Advances During Pandemic

Image
The need for remote care amid COVID-19 has re-emphasized the importance and use of remote monitoring for patient care. The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges and opportunities for health networks seeking to maintain care despite the stress on hospital resources and the need to maintain physical distance. The healthcare industry has seen a widespread shift towards telehealth, accompanied by growing investment in capacity that enables remote monitoring of patient symptoms. As a general phenomenon, medical networks across America have made significant strides in research into the use of wearable devices to improve health outcomes. At the GovernmentCIO Media & Research Military Health Summit Thursday, government and private sector officials discussed how their organizations have driven these advances in connected care. Much of this has depended on building existing networked care capacity, using the pandemic crisis as an opportunity to invest in the need for response measur

Here's how engaging in household chores may improve brain health

Chores done can be beneficial for brain health in older adults, according to a new study. The study found that older adults who spent more time doing household chores had larger brain sizes, which is a powerful predictor of cognitive health. The results of the study were published in the journal BMC Geriatrics. "Scientists already know that exercise has a positive effect on the brain, but our study is the first to show that housework can do the same," said Noah Koblinsky, lead author, exercise physiologist and project coordinator at Baycrest's Rotman Research Institute (RRI). Koblinsky added, "Understanding how different forms of physical activity contribute to brain health is critical to developing strategies to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults." In this study, researchers examined the relationships between household chores, brain volume, and cognition in a group of 66 cognitively healthy older adults living in the communit

STATE COLLEGE, PA. Scientists are developing a tiny, wearable device that can measure human sweat and provide feedback on a range of chronic conditions. This could make monitoring glucose much easier for diabetics. Penn State's team of bioengineers has developed a small, portable device that can be used to monitor health non-invasively. It's a waterproof patch with embedded sensors. Bioengineers designed it to adhere to and conform to the skin, during daily activities and during exercise. "This will allow us to capture all the important information related to heart rate, breathing and sweat a

Data privacy and health wearables in the workplace: Who should be accountable? (Reader Forum)

As 5G networks expand, industry experts are watching how the spread of 5G will stimulate the growth of wearable devices. Even without 5G, the market for connected wearable devices doubled between 2016 and 2019 and is expected to reach more than one billion by 2022, according to Statista. One area where the demand for wearable devices is expected to increase is in corporate wellness programs. More companies than ever before are handing out company-sponsored wearables to encourage employees to follow healthy habits - such as taking a certain number of steps per day - in order to lower the company's health rewards. Wireless fitness trackers and smartwatches provide an easy way to keep track of employee progress. Carriers are also likely to benefit from this trend, both in delivering the devices and their connectivity to enterprise customers, and in managing buyback programs. This places Carrier in a critical position to help organizations better manage

Now that people have direct access to technology and their devices, they have the opportunity to take their health and fitness directly into their hands, in their smartwatch, be it Apple, Samsung or Fitbit. As described in Techpluto, wearable technology, a trend that we had never heard of a few years ago, has turned out to be a "foreseeable sensation" as a result of rapid digitization. People today use and trust wearable technologies like the smartwatch to proactively manage both their health and illness, helping them meet their specific needs, be it physical or medical. When Tim Cook took the stage at an event in 2014 to announce the much-anticipated, long-debated Apple Watch, he described the product as a "comprehensive health and fitness device," according to The Verge report. His announcement set the standard for what the company thought of wearable devices and smartwatches, that is, they were designed not just for fun and timekee
