When shopping for cars, be sure to test-drive the technology | Lifestyles

Nowadays you often hear the word "infotainment". Put simply, the central screens that now dominate most dashboards control both information and entertainment, and you will interact with them quite often. The first thing you need to think about when looking at the screen is whether the menu system is logical. Then test the controls and the way you interact with them. Here are the basic types along with some questions to consider when testing. Touchscreen: Is it easy to understand the symbols or functions? Is it easy to switch between features like the audio system and navigation? Are the controls distracting while driving or are they hard to find? Is the screen responding to your touch or is there a lag? Are you getting glare from the sun that could be a problem? Touch Pads: Are the controls intuitive or do you want a touchscreen? How many pads are there? Where are you? (Some may be on the steering wheel.) Does the touchpad have different areas that you need to

While the wealth gap between rich and poor widened prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic recession, the past year has been a boon for the world's rich. Most billionaires have increased their personal wealth by billions, potentially widening the equality gap even further. While the world's working poor dream of economic stability, the 50 people on this list of youngest billionaires have it in their spades. The oldest billionaire walks in at 47, while the youngest, born in 1995, is only 26 years old. Stacker has compiled high net worth data from Forbes' real-time billionaires list as of March 17, 2021. and all age bonds were broken by the fortune. Includes those who received their billions as heirs to family wealth, as well as those who are self-made - although even many of the "self-made" wealthy of the world begin with many benefits in life, including seed capital from the family. Southern California needs to go big on clean technology – Whittier Daily News

Powerful innovations arise when societies focus on addressing their toughest problems. Our most recent and dramatic example was Operation Warp Speed, which helped accelerate the development of the Moderna vaccine and gave the United States a significant global advantage over the COVID-19 pandemic. Other examples of societies that benefit greatly from innovation from chronic problems are Japan's investment in robotics to cope with the shrinking workforce and India's development of inexpensive generics for a still largely low-income population. Southern California can take inspiration from these inspirational examples and focus much of its innovation and investment on addressing its chronic problem of harmful air pollution. Just this week, the American Lung Association released its annual State of the Air report, finding that the Los Angeles metropolitan area is the worst in the nation in terms of smog pollution. Counties of San Bernardino, Riverside, and Los Angeles were

Safety belts, the postal ‘service’ and using technology | News

Image
Every now and then I like to remind people of the need to wear seat belts in automobiles. Lately I have noticed an increasing number of reports of people being ejected from vehicles with fatal consequences. Which is almost always due to the fact that you are not wearing a seat belt. I installed one of the first seat belts in the area as a correspondent for the California newspaper Bakersfield and as a teenager. The California Highway Patrol began installing lap belts on their patrol cars in the mid-1950s when the Air Force discovered they were losing more troops to car accidents in the US than in Korea. Ford jumped on the train by building safer cars and installing the seat belts. Other manufacturers soon followed. Adoption was slow, with the usual fear and reluctance to change. When shoulder straps were introduced, some drivers complained of c

Mock job interviews prepare VC process technology students | Higher Education

Aaron Points has never had to interview for a job. So the aspiring graduate of Victoria College's process technology program wouldn't miss an opportunity to see what the experience is like. Dillon Hammond of Dow Chemical, Bobby Garner of Invista, Shawn Wehmeyer and Lance Harlan of Formosa Plastics, and Beth Baker of Austin Water recently spent six hours conducting mock interviews with 14 students on the VC Process Technology Program. The exercise helped students prepare for the difficult questions they will have to answer when applying for a job. “I've worked for a couple of companies and they really needed help, so they hired me. There wasn't an actual interview process, ”said Points, who will complete the program with an Associate of Applied Science in the spring. "So that was a new experience for me." Fred Chastain, VC pr

Valneva Covid vaccine trial to compare 'old-fashioned' technology with AstraZeneca jab

Image
Senior members of the committee have suggested they could extend the advice to those in their thirties if the background of Covid stays low. Similar potentially linked clots in people who have taken the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have led scientists to speculate that the adenoviral vector platform technology used by both bursts may be the causative factor. Valneva uses inactivated vaccine technology, a format that has been used for the past 100 years to vaccinate billions of people against diseases such as seasonal flu, hepatitis A, polio, and rabies. It injects a version of the live virus that is too weak to cause disease but strong enough to stimulate an immune response. The candidate jab is also given as an adjuvant, which means it contains an ingredient designed to produce a stronger immune response - a technique similar to the flu shots targeted at retirees in annual influenza vaccination campaigns. The shock has now completed the first and second phase safety and immun

A decade ago, nobody could have predicted that one day millions of people would be wearing a watch that not only tells the time but reads messages, plays music, takes calls and tracks their health too! But in just a few years, wearable technology has gone from being non-existent to being omnipresent. And the sole purpose of these wearable tech devices is to improve and enhance our lifestyles. However, until recently the wearable tech market was growing at its own pace, with many people showing interest in them but not yet fully aware of the true potential of these devices. But it seems 2020 has shaken things up quite a bit. These wearable tech devices are now as popular as mobile devices, and their tendency to get faster and smaller at the same time and their availability in different forms has only added to their appeal. For instance, wearable tech masks have become a thing as have wearable ink stilettos and wearab

Plastic electronics: Ushering in the next generation of technology

Image
From cat's whisker detectors in the early 20th century to the electronic circuit chips in modern cell phones, electronic devices have been modified in a variety of creative ways to suit the needs of mankind. In addition to increasing the efficiency of commonly used semiconductors such as silicon, recent research has focused on researching cheaper semiconductor materials. In line with these requirements, a recent publication in Nature Materials has successfully optimized inexpensive semiconductor materials that are very similar in composition to plastic to conduct electricity more efficiently than before. Solar cells have the ability to convert sunlight into electrical energy. This is a renewable energy source, and scientists have tried to make solar cells more efficient in order to maximize the use of the sunlight we receive. While silicon is a widely used semiconductor material in modern solar cells, much research has been directed towards experimenting with combinatio
