Optus to commence network technology refresh from April 2022
As part of its investment in building a world-class network, Optus will begin updating its network technology in late April 2022 and reallocating its 2100 MHz frequency assets as consumers and businesses continue to enjoy the speed and advanced capabilities of 4G and 5G -Technologies.
Some of the Optus 2100 MHz frequency assets currently used to support 3G technology are being reallocated to support better 4G network experience as well as the growth of 5G. This will result in a better and better customer experience. 5G will enable a range of new consumers and business use cases such as industrial automation and immersive entertainment using augmented and virtual reality.
Over the past 12 months, our customers have really embraced 5G technology, with adoption of 5G enabled devices growing significantly. It is important that our spectrum assets work well for customers and that they can really benefit from innovative and emerging technologies on our world-class networks as they move to new and more advanced 4G and 5G devices, said Lambo Kanagaratnam, Optus Managing Director Networks.
We know our customers are using more data than ever before. You download, share and stream content, use apps and virtually connect with friends and colleagues. To quench that thirst for connectivity, it is important that we evolve our network and redeploy our 2100 MHz frequency assets to better accommodate next-generation technologies.
After April 2022, Optus will no longer offer a dual-band 3G network, but only offer 3G services over its 900 MHz frequency band. Customers with a 3G device running at 2100 MHz only need to upgrade their device to have 4G LTE capabilities to access the Optus network. This gives them a better customer experience than the 2100 MHz 3G network.
Optus Wholesale Service Provider customers using the 2100 MHz network are also affected.
The important thing is that we give 12 months' notice to ensure that affected customers are aware of our plans and have enough time to upgrade to newer devices that support 4G or 5G, Kanagaratnam added.
Optus will begin custom communications with those affected by the change in the coming months, including contacting customers who may have very old SIM cards to assist in upgrading their SIM cards if necessary. We will also ensure that customers have access to the latest information on this technology update through the Optus website.
