Samsung to maximize foundry capacity amid global chip shortage

SEOUL - Samsung Electronics announced Thursday that it will maximize its foundry manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand for chips as global automakers and other manufacturers struggle to secure enough semiconductors for their products.

The world's second largest foundry company announced that its second production line in Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul, will begin mass production in the second half of this year to meet the growing demand for chips developed and in which fabless customers have been Companies outsource production.

Samsung started building its foundry production line in the city in May last year. It is planned to manufacture advanced 7-nanometer and 5-nanometer chips based on extreme ultraviolet technology. This will help increase Samsung's capacity. The Austin, Texas factory was restarted in late March after a power outage.

"We will maximize our foundry capacity by operating our Pyeongtaek line in the second half of the year and actively responding to increasing demand," said Han Seung-hoon, vice president of the company's foundry division, on a conference call.

Samsung's announcement comes as manufacturers in the automotive, technology and other industries are eager to have chips for their products as supply fails to meet the rising demand sparked by the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this month, the White House held a meeting with executives from Samsung, Intel and other companies to discuss how to ensure stable chip supplies in the US

Samsung's operating profit rose 45.5% year over year to 9.4 trillion won ($ 8.4 billion) in the first quarter. Sales rose 18.2% to 65.4 trillion won. Net income rose 46.2% to 7.1 trillion won.

The numbers were slightly above the company's profit forecast, which forecast operating income of 9.3 trillion won and sales of 65 trillion won. Compared to the previous quarter, Samsung's operating income was up 3.7%, while sales were up 6.2% and net income was up 8.1%.

The company said strong smartphone sales were the main driver of its performance alongside tablets, PCs and portable devices. The consumer electronics business also had solid sales as pent-up demand for home appliances and televisions continued during the pandemic.

However, operating income for the company's semiconductor division declined from Won 3.9 trillion a year ago to won 3.4 trillion in January through March, due to the disruption at the Austin factory.

Samsung said it was unable to produce 71,000 wafers due to the interruption, costing between 300 and 400 billion won.
