Smart meters can help build a sustainable future – today

The next two decades will bring many challenges - not least climate change, geopolitical tensions and the fight against inequality. At the same time, a number of revolutionary technologies will change much of our lives for the better.

The campaign group Smart Energy GB hired Foresight Factory, a team of consumer trend experts focused on the future, to study how UK residents might live their lives in 2035. In particular, we wanted to capture the sustainability, technology and energy trends that could shape their lives - and the role of smart meters in unlocking them.

The report predicts that in 15 years' time many of us will be living in fully automated smart homes, where innovations typically seen in science fiction films - like household robots - are commonplace. Our lives are supported by a multitude of sensors that, with our consent, connect to a constantly learning AI network. This will then adjust our home heating and appliances to support our health and comfort.

These technologies will change the way we run our homes. Getting caught by a broken washing machine could be a thing of the past as our home uses energy data patterns available from our smart meter to predict when a device might fail. With AI capabilities, the device in question can even initiate its own repair.

This transformation doesn't end in our kitchens and living rooms. Our entire energy system will change radically, giving us unprecedented authority over our electricity consumption. Advances in renewable energy are being combined with smaller, localized power grids to provide cheap and efficient electricity to millions. Individual households can generate, store and even sell their energy - thanks to smart meter data.

This smart future will have significant benefits for vulnerable and low-income consumers who would otherwise have difficulty making the transition to sustainability. From rental discounts for responsible use of energy to generating additional income through peer-to-peer energy supply - these innovations could make energy poverty a thing of the past.

In a smart home, senior citizens benefit from wearable technology that connects to other devices - including their smart meter - to monitor their health and wellbeing. The network recognizes when a sudden change in energy consumption could be an indicator of a major health problem - and can take action if necessary.

For younger generations, this seemingly futuristic world is becoming second nature, offering them additional tools to promote sustainability and combat climate change. 3D-printed, low-carbon homes will provide a more affordable and sustainable home, while smart data will create tailored incentives such as consumer discounts for environmentally friendly behavior.

At the center of all these aspects of our green future is a single device: the smart meter. This simple, safe and reliable device will be the linchpin of this improved energy system, providing the data necessary for all devices to understand the household's energy consumption and optimize their processes based on this information.

But while the smart meter can unlock all of these future opportunities, it also helps us leverage sustainability - and new technologies - now. By adopting smart meters, consumers across the country are not only helping to build a better energy system, but also saving time and money and making our society greener, more sustainable and more efficient.
