Internet of Things (IoT) Cloud Use Cases 2021

As many companies find new ways to extract data from their networks of connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices to improve process monitoring, customer interactions, and efficiency, they are becoming increasingly reliant on cloud environments.

The following case studies illustrate how multiple companies are integrating their IoT devices into the cloud to improve their business:

5 IoT Cloud case studies

1. Coca-Cola drink

As one of the major bottlers in the Coca-Cola ecosystem, Coca-Cola Içecek (CCI) serves more than 400 million consumers in 10 countries in Central Asia and the Middle East. CCI sought to improve the efficiency of its 26 bottling lines, starting with the inputs of their clean-in-place (CIP) equipment to model a twin digital bottling line.

"Our CIP is an everyday production process and crucial for the hygiene and quality requirements of the industry," says Burcu Hacioglu, Digital Twin Product Owner at CCI. "We wanted to improve process efficiency by avoiding errors in timing, which could lead to IHK systems overstressing energy and water."

CCI fed its industrial IoT information into the AWS cloud, where it was used to create data models that could be manipulated to improve the efficiency of the system. Early success with the CIP process motivated CCI to expand the model to include filler-mixer machines.

Industry: drink

IoT cloud provider: Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Results:

  • Over 30 opportunities for improvement identified
  • 20% electricity savings and 9% water savings
  • 34 days of processing time saved per year

2. Deep sky vineyard

Family-run Deep Sky Vineyard operates in Arizona and Argentina to grow grapes for wine. In one of their vineyards, an unsupervised irrigation valve broke and flooded an entire zone, motivating Deep Sky to improve information on the entire plant management process using cloud-connected instruments.

"This year I already know several ways we can improve our grapes," said Phil Asmundson, owner of Deep Sky Vineyard. "Without this digital solution ... we would not have the valuable knowledge that we need to make these decisions."

Deep Sky installed attached hardware to monitor water flow, soil moisture and other factors to automate and monitor the vineyard. The data flows wirelessly to the Google Cloud for processing and analysis.

Industry: Agriculture

IoT cloud provider: Google cloud

Results:

  • Saves 1.6 million gallons of water in 15 acres
  • Creates a labor saving of 30%
  • Reduces human error costs by up to 75%

3. DHL supply chain

DHL Supply Chain offers its customers highly automated logistics, storage, transport and distribution services in more than 50 countries around the world. Although DHL operates in a labor intensive industry, it strives to reduce the most labor intensive tasks through the use of robotics and automation.

"With the integration opportunities gained, employees can now simplify or eliminate the most tedious parts of their work and contribute in more valuable ways," says Fekko Roelofs, program manager for robotics hub and resource orchestration at DHL Supply Chain.

As the integration of the automation in each facility took a lot of time separately, DHL implemented a central hub in the cloud. Their new architecture feeds information from robotics, handheld devices, and other data sources to develop reports and enable quick and easy integration of new devices.

Industry: Supply chain

IoT cloud provider: Microsoft Azure

Results:

  • Reduced robotics integration times by 60%
  • Allows real-time data reporting through a centralized dashboard
  • Plug-and-play flexibility realized

4. Dow

The global chemical manufacturer Dow strives for zero security incidents. However, huge factories and numerous production lines result in a large number of points that need to be monitored for your digital operations center.

"In this situation, it wasn't just about the speed with which we can put together a solution for video surveillance at the edge - there are open source tools that we could have cobbled together with," says Michael Dessauer, Senior Solution Manager at Dow Digital Operations Center. "But we have to scale our solution to thousands of deployments."

Initially, Dow chose to use video to monitor for leaks. Video feeds require quick analysis to provide timely warnings, but they also require strict security. Dow chose to integrate edge technology to generate alerts quickly and also use the traditional cloud storage, machine learning (ML) applications for video analytics, process modeling and deeper analytics.

Industry: Chemicals

IoT cloud provider: Microsoft Azure

Results:

  • Leak sensors are now being used in places that are difficult, dangerous or costly to monitor with people
  • Human-trained AI continually improves the ability to detect leaks
  • Success in leak detection spurs the development of systems for PPE protection and safety monitoring

5. Thermo Fisher

Thermo Fisher manufactures laboratory research equipment worldwide. Their equipment could sequence the 3.2 billion base pairs in DNA, but the personal computers running Thermo Fisher software were inadequate for this flow of information.

“We tried to build our own cloud,” says Mark Field, CTO at Thermo Fisher Scientific. "We said very quickly ... this is not our core competence to operate a massive cloud infrastructure."

Instead, they worked with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create a private cloud environment for Thermo Fisher. Devices now route data directly to this cloud instead of local PCs to take advantage of the scale and improve collaboration.

Industry: Biotechnology and device manufacturers

IoT cloud provider: AWS

Results:

  • More than 1,000 partner organizations are now feeding information into the Thermo Fisher Cloud
  • First, the cloud IoT data will extend the reach of supercomputing to all researchers instead of a few
  • DNA sequencing will enable a future with more personalized patient care
