DVIDS - News - Science, technology and experiments, oh my!
When most people think of the Marine Corps, they think of an elite war organization. What most don't think is how the Marine Corps fits into the information age and the ever-evolving operating environment of science and technology.
Captain John Geldmacher, the technical information operations officer for the I Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group (MIG), also holds the science, technology and experimentation officer's collateral ticket.
Geldmacher joined the Marine Corps as an intelligence officer, but was selected for the Commander's Career Level Education Board (CCLEB). This enabled him to attend and obtain a Masters degree from the Post Naval Graduate School in Monterey, California.
As a Technical Information Operations Officer, Geldmacher creates connections between technical specialists, information-related skills and subject matter experts.
"I am a connection point in a constellation of organizations such as science, industry and research and development war centers," said Geldmacher.
IMIG enables this collaboration with the Pete Ellis Innovation Node, among others. This is an environment created to work on projects, organize classes, and find new ways to stop potential threats. This enables moneymakers to connect with people who can fill the loopholes in potential deficits that IMIG may have.
"Having these connections and knowing enough about everyone's work makes me dangerous," said Geldmacher.
As a science, technology and experimentation officer, Geldmacher can also initiate tests with commercial devices in a tactical environment. This allows him to analyze their skills and quickly acquire assets that would be needed in potentially dangerous situations.
In his role within an operational command, Geldmacher can take a look at what research results, new developments and commercial products are being used and what potential this technology could have within the IMIG. He also strives to integrate these new technologies quickly and economically.
“To deal with new and interesting challenges. There's always something different from what I've worked with in the past. It takes critical thinking, and that's part of my favorite part, ”said Geldmacher.
Money maker is a valuable asset for IMIG. He continues to innovate and constantly strive to push the boundaries of technology whenever and wherever possible.
