Usage of wearable devices in the medical industry is under scrutiny

Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, the medical technology industry is rapidly deploying and integrating telemedicine technologies. To monitor the spread of the disease and better understand the virus, many medical companies are developing and integrating artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and wearable technology into traditional healthcare. While AI and ML seem to find suitable niches in the medical industry, according to the latest survey, wearable devices may not be suitable for use.

In 2019, the wearable technology market was valued at nearly $ 27 billion. GlobalData predicts that figure will rise to $ 64 billion by 2024, which equates to a 19% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Although the market for wearable devices is growing year by year, medical professionals are questioning its functionality and usefulness in the medical industry.

Wearable devices are designed to better suit consumers. While collecting consumer data, doctors are skeptical of such information. In order to better serve the needs of medical professionals and remain relevant in the medical industry market, wearable device manufacturers must design and publish studies that document the accuracy of data from such devices in different populations.

Despite the review of the use of wearable devices in the medical industry, some applications currently under development show promise, such as one that assesses the mental health of patients by tracking their keystrokes. While there are opportunities for these devices in the medical industry, it is clear that their functionality needs to be re-evaluated in order to make them more accessible to patients and reliably useful to physicians.
